Highland County 4-H Shooting Sports Club holds round robin event

For the duration of the meeting on July 22, the members of the 4-H Highland County Shooting Sports Club participated in a round robin. It's a small competition between the friends and fellow members of the club. 

We had five tasks ahead of us. The younger kids got to enjoy trying new things as the older students got to enjoy tasks they have already tried and/or haven't done in a while. 

The first was a pistol task, we shot four gong targets left to right, then a spinner target in the center back. The second task was a rifle task, we shot balloons with tape for score, five points for tapped and minus one for no tape. The third task, which the younger kids seemed to enjoy the most, was a muzzleloader task; we shot a gong target, then a candle wick, then a string with a golf ball attached. 

To the few that were skilled enough to shoot a wick and/or string, we shot a vegetable that was much farther down range. The fourth task was a shotgun task, the older kids shot at flying clay pigeons as where the younger ones shot at ones on a board to make it easier targets. Most of the younger students haven't shot one before due to it being their first year. 

Then, the fifth and final task – my favorite one – was archery. We shot and scored a target that was set up down range. After the fun in the sun was done, we went inside and enjoyed a meal together that was made by the parents and instructors alike. We marked up the scores and gave out medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the junior and senior division. 

All of the kids got their books signed and/or completed and most are now starting on their posters for the up coming Highland County Fair. We do the posters for project judging, the boring part of the fun. This does help the students learn more about their discipline though, which is always fun to see.
