Herschel Zane Hook

Herschel Zane Hook, 97, of Hillsboro, passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023 at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. 

He was born Oct. 5, 1926 in Clinton County, the son of the late Floyd and Nellie Van Der Voort Hook. 

Herschel had been a dairy farmer for many years and later sold insurance for Modern Woodman Insurance. He was also a real estate agent and broker and owned the Highland Hills Realty in Hillsboro. Herschel loved telling stories, reading books on history and presidents and could remember facts about them to tell anyone who would listen. Herschel had been a member of St. Mary Episcopal Church and was a resident of The Laurels in Hillsboro. 

He is survived by one son, James Steven Hook of Hillsboro; one daughter, Shirley (Rick) Wilkin of Allensburg; two grandsons, Donald and Joe Hook of Beaver Creek; two granddaughters, Tanya (Pat) Hendrix of Hillsboro and Kelly (Scott Yankey) Wilkin of North Carolina; one great-grandson, Ashton Hook of Beaver Creek; two great-granddaughters, Kyla Hook of Kentucky and Ali Hendrix of Hillsboro; one sister, Betty (Tom) Hawkins-McDonough of Peebles; and three nephews, Doug, David and Michael Hawkins.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Mark Loren Hook and Carl Anthony Hook; the mother of his children, Hilda Dean Hook Wilkin; a niece, Deanne Hawkins Case; and brother-in-law, Odel Hawkins. 

The family would like to say a thank-you to Herschel’s caregivers at The Laurels; Marilyn Pence, who was so nice to watch out for him at The Laurels and keep him out of trouble. 

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro. Bob Stevens will officiate. Friends may call on Saturday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home.
