Weather warning system explained

The severe weather warning sirens are tested the first Wednesday of every month between noon and 2 p.m. unless there is threatening weather. If there is threatening weather on test day, the sirens will not be tested, so if you hear sirens, it will be an actual warning.

The Severe Weather Warning sirens are activated, one, if there is a tornado warning, or two, if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued while we are under a tornado watch. If you hear the sirens, you should take shelter. The sirens may be activated more than once and they are not used to sound all clear.
