'We are Marshall,' saying farewell to former high school building

MARSHALL – The old Marshall High School building was razed Wednesday, December 28, 2011, 92 years after it was constructed by local builder Don Main.
Marshall High School was housed in this building from 1919 to 1960.
The Hillsboro City Schools used it from 1961 until (approximately) 2003. Since then, the building has stood vacant, and has deteriorated considerably.
The Marshall community was very proud of the accomplishments of the students of this little rural high school, which set enviable records in academics, music and athletics.
The only high school in Highland County history ever to win a state basketball tournament championship, the Marshall Red Flashes (in the late 1920s) made two trips to the state tourney and came within one game of going to Columbus for the third time.
They brought home eight Highland County Tournament championships and were runners-up seven times. They were in the district tournament either as county champs or runners-up practically every year – until hitting a dry spot in the middle 1950s.
When the district closed, and transferred its students to Hillsboro in the fall of 1960, four of the five Indians' starters and the sixth man rode in on the Marshall school bus, each morning.
The old building is gone now, but will remain in the memories of several hundred Marshall graduates and former students now scattered all over the United States.[[In-content Ad]]
