Vote on SSCC faculty contract may wait until September

A vote on the ratification of a contract between Southern State Community College and the faculty's Southern State Education Association (SSEA) may have to wait until the board of trustees' regularly scheduled board meeting in September.
SSCC President Dr. Kevin Boys told The Highland County Press Tuesday that the Ohio Education Association has the contract and is "checking it for accuracy." Once they complete their review, the contract will be returned to the college for consideration, he said.
The college announced July 20 that a tentative agreement had been reached between SSCC and the SSEA. The release stated that the current contract is scheduled to expire in August 2010.
The last contract was signed in November 2008 by the SSEA and Jim Ward, who was then the president of the college board of trustees. The matter did not go before the full board for a vote.
It was announced in July that the board would hold a special session Aug. 11 to consider the contract, but that meeting was subsequently cancelled and another meeting has not been called.
"We have a regular meeting scheduled for Sept. 8, and we're kind of nearing that date," Boys said. "There may be an outside chance of an earlier, special meeting, but it may just be brought up at the regular meeting. We had intended to have special meeting, but we are just awaiting the contract. I want to do things professionally, and it's kind of hard to vote on a contract unless you have it in hand."
