Strickland proclaims June 26 as Amateur Radio Operators' Appreciation Day

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland has proclaimed June 26, 2010 as "Amateur Radio Operators' Appreciation Day." 

The proclamation was issued in honor of the many thousands of Ohio radio amateurs who have provided "valuable public assistance through emergency radio communications on a local, statewide, national, and international basis in times of need." 

On June 26-27, Ohio radio amateurs (hams) will take part in Field Day emergency preparedness exercises, together with thousands of other radio amateurs throughout the United States. The exercises involve setting up and operating an amateur station, often using emergency power and simulated emergency communications conditions. Once the stations are operative, the amateurs will contact similar stations around the country. Field Day is the climax of a week long "Amateur Radio Week" sponsored by the ARRL, the National Association for Amateur Radio.

Field Day is a part of ham radio operators' long tradition of service in providing emergency communications. Showing the newest digital and satellite capabilities, voice communications and even Morse Code, hams from across the USA will be testing and demonstrating emergency communications capabilities. Those communications have provided valuable assistance during such disasters as Hurricane Katrina, 9/11 and the Haitian earthquake when cell-phones and other communications modes were inoperable. Governor Strickland's proclamation recognizes the "importance of the amateur radio operators' role in preparing for public service and emergency communications" and acknowledge that those radio amateurs donate their personal equipment, time and expertise to this service.

According to Highland ARA president Roger Gladdish, this year the Clinton County Amateur Radio Association and Highland Amateur Radio Association will conduct a joint field day at 810 Levo Rd., New Vienna beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 26. The last jointly held Field Day was over 30 years ago. The public is invited to attend and observe modern amateur radio communication operation.
