S.R. 72 shooting incident under investigation; one injury reported

Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera reports that at approximately 6:29 p.m. on May 14, 2015, the Highland County Sheriff's Office received a call from the 1100 block of S.R. 72.

The daughter of a wounded individual stated that she came home and found her mother lying in the yard with a gunshot wound to her left side.

Sheriff Barrera reports that Highland County Sheriff's Office deputies and the Leesburg Life Squad were called to the scene.

Officers arrived and found Janice Jones, 52, of Leesburg, lying in the yard. Jones advised that she had been out in the yard shooting and fell into a hole. Jones further advised that while attempting to get up, that the gun went off, striking her in her left side.

Med Flight was called to the scene and Jones was flown to Kettering Hospital.

The incident remains under investigation.
