Rep. Becker introduces bill allowing drivers to communicate with headlights

State Representative John Becker (R-Clermont County) has introduced legislation that would allow drivers to flash their headlights to inform oncoming drivers of potential dangers, hazards or other vehicles of interest.
 
The idea for House Bill 475 came from Missouri, where a federal court ruled that the town of Ellisville could not cite or prosecute drivers for flashing their headlights to warn of police radar or accidents.

The court ruled that such a prohibition violates the First Amendment’s right to free speech.
 
“This bill would protect Ohioans from being prosecuted for sharing valuable information with fellow drivers, such as regarding accidents, deer in the road and speed traps,” Becker said.
 
House Bill 475 was assigned to the House Transportation, Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee.
