Portman denounces continued Russian aggression in Ukraine, calls for stronger U.S. support

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) has released the following statement in response to the recent escalation of violence in Ukraine.
“The heightened tension in Ukraine over the last several weeks appears to be the result of a coordinated Russian campaign to destabilize eastern Ukraine and lay the groundwork for even more aggressive actions against the Ukrainian people,” Portman said.
“While I am hopeful the ongoing negotiations in Geneva will lead to an agreement that ensures peace, I am skeptical of Russia’s willingness to play a constructive role. Only the Ukrainian people can decide their country’s future, and the United States and its allies must stand with them during this time of Russian aggression.
[[In-content Ad]]"The United States must provide more robust support to the Ukrainian government, including badly needed military aid, and demonstrate greater leadership in standing up to Russia’s expansionist policies. We must work to enact stronger penalties, including stricter sanctions, against Russia so that President Putin understands the consequences of continuing down the path of violence and aggression.”
Recently, Portman voted in favor of a Ukraine aid package that will authorize security, financial, and technical support for Ukraine. He is an original cosponsor of legislation that would ensure the United States does not recognize Russian control over the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine.
