Portman comments on Prime Minister Netanyahu's address

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) released the following statement on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress:

“I appreciated the opportunity to hear firsthand from Prime Minister Netanyahu on the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship, as well as the importance of preventing a nuclear Iran.

"There should be no mixed messages regarding our strong strategic partnership, and I plan to continue my efforts to ensure the United States stands with our greatest ally in the Middle East, Israel. Any agreement must stop the Iranian nuclear weapons program, and be enforceable and verifiable.

“In the last two days, I have had multiple conversations with the Ohioans here for the AIPAC Policy Conference. We talked about Israel, the need to stop the Iranian nuclear program, the bill I just introduced to fight a global movement to isolate Israel through boycotts and sanctions on Israel and businesses that do business with Israel. I look forward to making progress on these issues because a strong U.S.-Israel alliance is good for the security of both countries.”

Sen. Portman met with members of Ohio’s American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) this morning to discuss his ongoing efforts to strengthen U.S.-Israeli ties. Yesterday, Portman announced the introduction of the United States-Israel Trade Enhancement Act of 2015, legislation to combat the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Portman also recently sponsored a Senate resolution welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to the United States.
