Portman, Brown urge ITC to protect Ohio candle manufacturers

On Friday, U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) sent a letter to International Trade Commission (ITC) Chairman Meredith Broadbent urging the agency to enforce existing trade law and ensure a level playing field in order to protect the Ohio and domestic wax candle industry from unfair competition.

“Candle companies in Ohio have informed us that the antidumping tariffs on imports from China protect them from economic harm and market share loss as a direct result of foreign producers’ predatory pricing practices. Anticompetitive foreign business tactics must not be allowed to undermine U.S. manufacturers and their workers,” write Portman and Brown. “It is of the upmost importance that the ITC uphold a level playing field for our domestic manufacturers.”

Dear Chairman Broadbent:
 
We write in support of the efforts made by the International Trade Commission (ITC) to protect the domestic petroleum wax candle industry from predatory pricing practices by foreign candle manufacturers. The Commission recently initiated its fourth Sunset Review of the Antidumping Duty Order on petroleum wax candles from China. On behalf of candle producers in Ohio and across the country, we urge the ITC to retain the Order, so as to ensure a level playing field for domestic candle producers. 
  
Candle companies in Ohio have informed us that the antidumping tariffs on imports from China protect them from economic harm and market share loss as a direct result of foreign producers’ predatory pricing practices. Anticompetitive foreign business tactics must not be allowed to undermine U.S. manufacturers and their workers.
 
It is of the upmost importance that the ITC uphold a level playing field for our domestic manufacturers. We respectfully urge the ITC to vigorously enforce our antidumping duty laws and to conduct an expedited review of the existing Antidumping Duty Order on candles from China. Indeed, it is our understanding that the Chinese industry failed to even enter an appearance in the Commission’s sunset proceeding.
