Portman announces ENFORCE Act headed to president for signature

U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) announced that his provisions to help Ohio workers by cracking down on customs duty evasion schemes and combat the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement have passed the Senate and are now headed to the President for signature.

The ENFORCE Act will help to stop efforts to illegally import goods and deliberately circumvent our customs process which is a top priority for American manufacturers. The anti-BDS section sets out U.S. policy identifying the importance of the bilateral U.S.-Israel trade relationship and establishes principal trade negotiating objectives, statements of policy, findings and other provisions related to trade and commercial activities affecting the U.S. and Israel.   

 
“I’m pleased that the Senate passed the Customs Bill, including provisions that I’ve long championed,” Portman stated. “This legislation will crack down on foreign countries that evade customs duties, which is an important part of protecting Ohio jobs. Stopping these efforts to illegally import goods and deliberately circumvent our customs process is a top priority for American manufacturers, and I am pleased it is now headed to the President for signature.

“Additionally, this bill sends a clear message that if you want to be an economic partner with the United States, you cannot support attempts to economically weaken Israel.”
