Press Release-
State Senator Bob Peterson (R-Washington Court House) has announced the Ohio Controlling Board's release of funds to purchase equipment for the welding training program at Chillicothe Correctional Institution.

Ohio Penal Industries operates the Vehicle Modification Shop located at Chillicothe Correctional Institution as part of its workforce training program. Installing snow plows and spreaders for approximately 160 ODOT trucks each years, VMS provides inmates with marketable workforce training opportunities that can be useful in obtaining employment upon their release.

"This program provides a two-fold benefit for Ohio's taxpayers," Peterson said. "The state of Ohio saves on vehicle maintenance costs, while inmates have the opportunity to gain useful skills that increases their likelihood of obtaining employment upon their release."

Employment is a leading determinant in whether inmates return to prison after their release. Providing job training opportunities for prisoners has contributed to lower overall recidivism rates in Ohio, compared to national rates.
