Peterson, Scherer join Academy of Pediatrics to distribute free bike helmets at Ross County Fair

State Senator Bob Peterson (R-Washington Court House) and State Representative Gary Scherer (R-Circleville) joined the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP) Tuesday to host a bike helmet distribution and fitting event at the Ross County Fair. Helmets were distributed free of charge to those who attended today's event.
Senator Peterson and Representative Scherer joined Hayley Southword, a program manager for the American Academy of Pediatrics, to provide information on bike helmet safety and help children get properly fitted for their new helmets.
“Bike helmet safety is an important way we can protect the children in our community and I’m proud to join Ohio AAP to give more children the chance to ride safely,” Peterson said. “By distributing bike helmets and safety information in our community, we can teach our kids how important it is to wear a helmet when riding a bike and help them learn how to stay safe when they're enjoying our neighborhoods.”

More than 70 children were fitted and received new bike helmets during Tuesday's event at the Ross County fairgrounds.
Over 10,000 bike helmets have been distributed in Ohio this year as part of the "Put a Lid on It!" bike safety campaign.
In 2010, 51,000 people were injured by not wearing a bike helmet. Bicycles are tied to more childhood injuries than any other consumer product, other than automobiles. A combination of efforts is necessary to effectively increase helmet usage rates among Ohio children, including raising awareness of the benefits, encouraging from adults and distributing bike helmets to Ohio children.
