Operation Christmas Child countdown event scheduled in Wilmington

Christmas is months away, but Operation Christmas Child volunteers are in full swing preparing shoe box gifts to be delivered to children around the world.
Eager to share the full story of the Operation Christmas Child project, the South Central Ohio Area Team is hosting a Countdown Kick-Off Event on Sept. 30, 7 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Wilmington. The church is located at 1920 U.S. 22 West. Promotional material and shoe boxes will be available at the event.
Special guest for the Countdown Event is John Holden, International Field Ministry and Discipleship Manager for Operation Christmas Child (OCC). Mr. Holden has served as a Regional Director for South and East Africa, and implemented a revolutionary volunteer training program for 70 National Leadership Team members from 18 countries. Under his leadership, OCC South and East Africa distributed more than 3.5 million shoe box gifts to needy children, and enrolled 970,000 children in the OCC Discipleship Program.
His focus will be on growing the international volunteer training program and The Greatest Journey discipleship program. Also featured will be Hannah Zimmerman, participant in the Samaritan’s Purse Youth Team (SPY), who will share her experiences on a shoe box distribution to Belize.
A shoe box gift is often the only present that a boy or girl in a developing country will ever receive, and can change a child’s life for eternity. However, the full story is the discipleship program, The Greatest Journey, offered to children receiving a shoe box. The 12-lesson set guides children through a study of who Jesus Christ is, what it means to follow Him, and how to share this exciting message with others. After children complete the program, they are presented with a personalized certificate and a New Testament in their own language.
“I give thanks to God for the opportunity He gave me to study the Bible lessons,” said 14 year old Gimena from Paraguay. “Through them, many children have met Jesus. I invited my friends to the classes, and many of them received Jesus as their Savior too.”
The South Central Ohio Area Team is a core of dedicated volunteers from Adams, Brown, Clinton, Fayette and Highland Counties working year round to further the project. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse (http://www.samaritanspurse.org ).
