Ohio Supreme Court to conduct Oct. 19 session in Highland County

Judge Rocky Coss is honored to announce that the Ohio Supreme Court will conduct its fall off-site session of the Court on Oct. 19 in the Common Pleas Courtroom in the Highland County Courthouse, the oldest courthouse in continuous use in the State of Ohio, having been completed in 1834.
The court will hear oral argument in four cases. Selected high school students from the county will attend the hearing on one case and after the hearing is completed will be conducted to a meeting room in the county administration Building for a question and answer session with the attorneys who argued the case. We anticipate that we will be able to accommodate 60 students for each case.
After the Court’s session is completed the Highland County Bar Association will be sponsoring a luncheon for the Justices, members of the bar, attorneys who argued the cases before the court, county officials and some of the students and teachers who attended the sessions.
The Supreme Court has conducted off site sessions since 1987 which was the bicentennial of the United States Constitution. There are usually two sessions, one in the spring and one in the fall. The session will be broadcast live and can be viewed on the Ohio Supreme Court website.
This is a great honor for the citizens of Highland County and an opportunity to learn more about the operations of the Supreme Court. Judge Coss and his staff will be coordinating the event with the Supreme Court staff, other county officials, the Highland County Bar Association and other groups who are interested in participating in this historic event.
"We will try to have seats available for members of the public to attend one or more of the cases depending upon seating availability," Judge Coss said.
"Once we have determined the number of seats needed for students and those available for the public, we will make an announcement that people desiring to attend can contact the court and be placed on a list. Depending on the interest, it may be necessary to limit attendance to one case or do a lottery type drawing if there are not sufficient seats."
