Ohio lawmaker pays tribute to World War II veterans, twin brothers

Prior to coming to Hillsboro for a special ceremony Tuesday evening, Ohio Rep. Cliff Rosenberger was at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton.
The Clarksville Republican had also toured the London correctional facility earlier in the day, and was running just a little behind schedule for his 6 p.m. Hillsboro engagement for two special World War II twin brothers.
"I was talking to a general at Wright-Patt," Rep. Rosenberger said, "and I told him I had to get to Hillsboro to see two World War II veterans. The general said, 'They outrank me.' And, with that, we were off to Hillsboro."
Those World War II veterans are twin brothers Marion and Marcus Lewis, who celebrated their 85th birthday Saturday, July 16 at the home of Gary and Ruthie (Lewis) Tucker of Hillsboro. Ruthie is Marc's daughter.
After reading about the Lewis brothers in The Highland County Press, Rep. Rosenberger had his staff contact the newspaper about an Ohio House of Representatives letter of appreciation in their honor and in recognition of their service.
"This is our greatest generation," the Ohio lawmaker said Tuesday in a ceremony with Lewis family members gathered outside the historic Highland County Courthouse.
With a brief reference to the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, Rep. Rosenberger paid tribute to the Lewis brothers' service during the Second World War in the United States Army Infantry.
"It's a little ironic that we're here in Ohio's 86th (House) District, and you two were in the 86th Army Infantry," Rosenberger, a U.S. Air Force Reserves veteran, said.
"We would not be here today without people like these veterans," Rosenberger said. "On behalf of the 129th Ohio General Assembly, I thank you for your service to our country."
Letters to the Lewis brothers from Rep. Rosenberger read, in part: "On behalf of the House of Representatives of the state of Ohio, we are pleased to extend special recognition to Marcus and Marion Lewis on the memorable occasion of your 85th birthday.
"Your birthday serves as a reminder of the love and affection your family and friends have for you, and it is also a time when you can reflect on the many and varied events of which you can take pride in your accomplishments and your contributions to the community.
"You are U.S. military veterans, and you have the satisfaction of knowing that you have set an example of service and achievement worth emulating."
According to Marc and Marion, the Army did its best to keep the twin brothers close together during their time in the service, both stateside and in the Philippines.
"For the most part, we were in the same company," Marion said. "And if one of us got a three-day pass, so did the other one."
Marc and Marion Lewis thanked Rep. Rosenberger for the recognition from the Ohio General Assembly as well as their earlier recognition by the Highland County Honor Guard.
