Michael Mountjoy of the Hillsboro Christian Academy wins Hillsboro Rotary Club Four-Way Speech Contest

For the second straight year, Michael Mountjoy of the Hillsboro Christian Academy is the winner of the Hillsboro Rotary Club Four-Way Speech Contest.

The 2015 contest was held Tuesday, Feb. 24 at the Ponderosa Banquet Center.

Other finalists this year were Chloe Griggs and Bryanna Buerkle of Hillsboro High School and Cody Wilson of the Hillsboro Christian Academy.

The students receive cash awards from the Rotary Club for their winning speeches.

The contestant must apply the Rotary Four-Way Test to the concepts of leadership, service to others and life experience. The Rotary Four-Way Speech Test is as follows:

• Is it the TRUTH?

• Is it FAIR to all concerned?

• Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

• Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

The speech is to be presented from memory without the aid of podium, notes, displays or props.

This year's judges were Virginia Purdy, Betty Bishop and Jennifer West. Committee members are Rotarians: Amatha Farrens, Sue Smith, Melissa Elmore, Lynn Turner, Doug Ernst, Adam Zink and Jim Smith.

Mountjoy will compete in the annual District Competition on March 22 at Wright State University.

Hillsboro Rotary Club was founded in October 1936. The local club is a member of Rotary International, with its roots in Evanston, Ill.
