Mayor Zink, commissioners proclaim Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Month

The Highland County Board of Commissioners and Hillsboro Mayor Dick Zink proclaimed October as Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Month in Highland County at the Sept. 28 commission meeting. This year's shoebox collection week is Nov. 14-21.
Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, a project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse, headed by Franklin Graham, has hand-delivered more than 85 million gift-filled shoe boxes to needy children in some 130 countries.
Right now, Operation Christmas Child is looking for volunteers in Highland County to help fill those shoe boxes with small gifts — as part of a massive effort to help bring joy to more than 8 million children in 100 countries.
Operation Christmas Child needs volunteers to pack shoe boxes with toys, necessity items, school supplies, candy and hand-written notes of encouragement. The shoe box gifts will be hand-delivered to children who are suffering because of natural disaster, disease, war, terrorism, famine and poverty. For many of these kids, this simple shoe box will be the first gift they have ever received.
A kickoff event will be hosted by Calvary Baptist Church, 1920 U.S. 22 west in Wilmington, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.
