Lt. Governor Taylor announces chiropractor sentenced for insurance fraud

Ohio Lieutenant Governor Mary Taylor announced that chiropractor Jeffrey R. Shope, of Blacklick, Ohio, and owner of True Health Chiropractic, located in Westerville, Ohio, was sentenced in United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio to one year and one day in prison for one count of insurance fraud.

Shope pleaded guilty on Sept. 29, 2015.
 
“We are keeping close watch over the Ohio insurance marketplace as part of our aggressive efforts to protect consumers from insurance fraud,” said Taylor, also director of the Ohio Department of Insurance. “I thank our partner agencies for working with us to ensure that justice was served.”
 

[[In-content Ad]]A joint investigation involving the Ohio Department of Insurance, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) revealed that Shope engaged in illegal billing practices from January 2009 to December 2012 to obtain nearly $700,000 in fraudulent payments from federal health care benefits programs, the BWC and private insurance companies.
 
Shope submitted insurance claims for services he never provided to patients and double-billed both private insurance companies and government programs for the same dates of service.
 
Ohioans aware of insurance fraud are urged to report it to the Ohio Department of Insurance by calling the fraud hotline at 800-686-1527. Insurance fraud information is available at www.insurance.ohio.gov.
