Latest redistricting plan would place Highland County in Second District

Ohio House lawmakers have agreed to a revised congressional map that, if approved, would place Highland County in the Second Congressional District.
State lawmakers also have a tentative agreement for one 2012 primary election, to be held March 6.
The legislation passed the House 77-17, with 21 Democrats joining the majority-party Republicans.
Ohio Democratic Party Chairman and a member of Ohioans for Fair Districts, Chris Redfern issued the following statement: “Two months ago, we set out to give Ohioans a voice in the redistricting process, because Republicans did not give them that voice. Democrats could have sat idly by and accepted the Republicans’ unfair, gerrymandered map. But just as we have done all year, we fought back against their overreaching agenda.
“Ohioans deserve to know that their votes matter. They deserve fair and competitive elections, the ability to hold politicians of all parties accountable and the chance to elect good leaders who will serve the public interest by working together to create jobs.
"The events of the last six months make clearer than ever that Democrats and Republicans need to come together to support a constitutional amendment to change the way we redraw Congressional and state legislative districts. Voters deserve a redistricting process that is fair and open, and they deserve districts that are competitive, that hold together like communities and that protect minority representation."
Congressman Mike Turner released the following statement upon the General Assembly’s approval of a new Congressional map:
“I’m glad to see that the Ohio General Assembly has voted on a bill which will make both Montgomery County and our community whole. This permits our Congressional representative to focus on the Miami Valley as opposed to being split between Dayton and Columbus as originally proposed. Our area deserves a representative who is focused on the many and varied issues which confront our region. I look forward to filing the required signatures to run for this seat, and continue working on behalf of our community to create jobs, rein in out-of-control spending and preserve our nation’s security.”[[In-content Ad]]
