From pot holes in the road to pot shots, a fund-raising roast will be held for Jim Surber, Darke County Engineer and regular editorial columnist for The Highland County Press, on Tuesday, June 22.

The roast will benefit the “First Mile” of paved recreational trails developed by the Darke County Park District. The “First Mile” is located in Gettysburg and heads east. The trail will be paved early this summer.  

Having served as Darke County engineer for more than 30 years, roasters will have a lot of miles to cover with the former Highland County resident.

Surber is a graduate of Whiteoak High School in Mowrystown and the Ohio State University.

Held on Tuesday, June 22, at the Shawnee Prairie Nature Center, guests will enjoy a social time beginning at 6 p.m., before having dinner. The roast follows and the evening will conclude at 9 p.m.

Shawnee Prairie Preserve, located at 4267 Route 502 near Greenville, "accurately describes a park that is steeped in a rich mix of history and native plants and wildlife," according to www.darkecountyparks.org. "Archeological evidence has confirmed that at least a portion of Shawnee Prairie Preserve was the site of Prophetstown. This village was founded by Tecumseh’s brother, (called The Prophet), to rally 15 woodland Indian Nations to gather here and demonstrate their living and hunting rights under the 1795 Treaty of Greene Ville."

Surber has volunteered his time to engineer the trails and agreed to be roasted to help benefit the locally funded portion of the Clean Ohio State Grant that the Park District has received.

The cost is $15 per person person or $25 if two people are attending together. This includes dinner. Guests wanting to roast Jim, will pay an additional $10 for five minutes of roasting time.

Senator Fred Strahorn will be the emcee for the evening. Special thanks to Maid Rite and Buchy Foods for their support of the event, and to Paul Ackley for his caricature of the engineer.
