Hillsboro Post Office offers free delivery to military personnel in Mideast

The Hillsboro Post Office is providing free postage on any flat-rate parcel mailed to any military personnel currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, effective Nov. 1-30, 2010, for Highland County residents.
Also, if residents are unable to afford to send something, they can provide the post office with the name and address of their family member serving in the Mideast and the post office will send them a box anyway.
"This is in order to honor those who went before us and those that they love," said Hillsboro Postmaster Curtis Pegram.
If you don't know anyone overseas and you want to get involved, you can: Donate nonperishable items; donate letters of encouragement; or donate sports equipment that will fit in a flat rate box, and the post office will package it up and send it for free.
"The students at the local school districts are invited to put together a letter or drawing or both and we will place them in each box we send. Last year, the students sent approximately 1,600 letters," Pegram said.
"The pastors and elders at the local churches are invited to put together words of encouragement and/or any other spiritual items that they would deem appropriate and we will add them to the boxes. Anything that you can think of that a soldier or airman would hold dear while they are away from home, we will pack into a flat rate box and send it for free during the month of November.
"Yes, some of our loved ones have come home, and yet, some remain. We cannot forget about those who continue to fight overseas," Pegram said. "We also cannot forget about the sacrifice their families and friends have had to endure while they were away."
Pegram planned the free delivery so the packages could arrive during the holidays.
Some of the suggested items to donate include: nonperishable food, including canned goods, gum and hard candy, boxed snacks or cereal, condiment packs,
drink mixes, and dried fruit; recreation items, such as batteries, board games, sporting goods, pens and paper, and Nerf balls; and personal items, such as toiletries, Advil/Tylenol, sinus medicine, sunscreen, nail clippers, and first aid kits.
