The Hillsboro Middle School National Junior Honor Society held induction ceremonies on Thursday, Feb. 12, as 43 seventh- and eighth-graders joined the 29 eighth-grade members who were inducted last year.
This year, Hillsboro resident and candidate for mayor Pamela Limes was the featured speaker.
Limes shared personal stories and talked about the "can-do" spirit with the National Junior Honor Society inductees.
"From now until you graduate high school, you will be making major life decisions like who you want to be, what kind of work you want to do, whether or not to go to a university, community college or vocational school and where to go," Limes told the students.

"You don’t have to decide all of that right away, because you should stay open to what life brings you. We all have a plan, but sometimes our journey will take us places we did not expect to go. Be curious. Education is not just books, it is also having experiences. You learn from everything you do.
"So, learn about the world which is growing smaller every day. You will need to be aware and tolerant of people who are different. The best way I know to interact with other people is simply the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. To me, this means remember to be kinder. I don’t know about you, but the people in my life who I remember with the most affection are those who were the kindest to me. You can never go wrong if you keep this in mind as you go through life: Try to be kinder."
Limes congratulated the Hillsboro students on their academic achievements and wished them the best as they continue in middle school and begin high school.
"Remember one very important thing," Limes said, "You will not be alone as you move through life. You will succeed not only because of what you do, but also because of other people. So, thank your parents, thank your teachers, thank anyone who has helped you along the way. Your life will be so enriched if you are kind and just say thank you."
