A Hillsboro man charged in two separate cases was sentenced Wednesday for theft, grand theft of a motor vehicle and receiving stolen property.

In December 2019, Bryce Ballein, 28, of Hillsboro was charged with theft, a fifth-degree felony, and grand theft of a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony. The indictment accused Ballein of stealing “credit cards, checkbooks and other miscellaneous items” from one victim, along with a 2005 Cadillac Deville owned by a separate victim. Ballein pleaded guilty to those charges in March.

A grand jury indicted Ballein again in February, charging him with one fifth-degree felony count of receiving stolen property. Ballein was accused of “receiving, retaining or disposing of” jewelry valued between $1,000 and $7,500, while “knowing or having reasonable cause to believe said property had been obtained through the commission of a theft offense.” This occurred in December 2019 in Highland County “and as a continuing course of criminal conduct in Montgomery County,” according to the indictment. Ballein also pleaded guilty to this charge.

On May 13, Ballein was sentenced in Highland County Common Pleas Court to a definite determinate term of six months for the theft charge, to be served consecutively to nine months for the grand theft charge and eight months for receiving stolen property, for a total of 23 months. He received jail time credit of 46 days. Ballein was also ordered to pay court costs in both cases and to pay restitution for the receiving stolen property victim.

A second suspect, Jacob R. Wright, was also charged with receiving stolen property in a joint indictment with Ballein in February. Wright is still awaiting trial.
