A Hillsboro man has been sentenced to 10 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to an amended charge of rape.
As previously reported, Joseph M. McClure, 30, was charged with rape, a first-degree felony, and gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony, during the May 3 Highland County grand jury session. The original indictment alleged that McClure “did engage in sexual conduct” with a child victim during an approximate month-and-a-half time frame.
During a status hearing Wednesday, June 22 in Highland County Common Pleas Court, McClure pleaded guilty to an amended count of rape, with the gross sexual imposition charge dismissed.
McClure was represented by attorney Kathryn Hapner, with Assistant Prosecutor Adam King appearing on behalf of the state.
Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss sentenced McClure to a definite determinate term of 10 years to life at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, with jail time credit of 79 days. McClure will also be classified as a tier III sex offender, requiring registration every 90 days for life.
As noted by the judge and other counsel during the hearing, the term of 10 years to life in prison is a mandatory sentence for this offense.
“Whether you get out at all will be up to the Adult Parole Authority,” Coss told McClure.
In the event McClure is released from prison, he will be placed under five years of post-release control, the judge said.
