Sheriff Donnie Barrera reports for the week of May 30 through June 5, the Highland County Sheriff’s Office received 343 911 calls, answered 174 requests for service, took 39 offense reports and investigated two traffic crashes.
On May 30 at 9:13 p.m., several citizens on McCoppin Mill Road called the sheriff’s office to report a male with a gun threatening neighbors and family members. Sheriff’s deputies and an Ohio Department of Natural Resources officer immediately responded to the scene. However, by the time law enforcement arrived, the suspect had retreated into a residence, where several shots were heard. The Highland County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team was called to the scene, along with Paint Creek Fire and EMS. The brief standoff ended a short time later with the suspect surrendering to deputies with no further incident. Stephen A. Routt of Sardinia was arrested and transported to the Highland County Justice Center.

On June 2 at 9:30 p.m., a resident of the 11000 block of state Route 753 called the sheriff’s office to report his home had been burglarized and several firearms were missing. A deputy was dispatched to the scene, where evidence was collected and an offense report was taken. The incident remains under investigation.
A citizen in Sinking Spring called the Sheriff’s Office on June 4 at 1:19 a.m. to report a suspicious vehicle parked on North Main Street flashing its lights and honking the horn. A deputy responded to find the vehicle in question had been involved in a crash and abandoned. A crash investigation was completed, and the vehicle was towed to impound pending further investigation.
On June 4 at 12:18 p.m., a deputy was dispatched to a residence on Rosher Road in Penn Township when a homeowner called to report the windows had been shot out of her garage. An offense report was taken. The incident is still under investigation.
