Highland County Sheriff's Report
Highland County Sheriff Donnie Barrera reports for the week of Aug. 31-Sept. 6, the Highland County Sheriff’s Office received 374 911 calls, answered 121 requests for service, dispatched 110 fire and EMS runs, took 27 offense reports and investigated six traffic crashes.
A female called the sheriff’s office at 2:39 p.m. on Aug. 31 to report being assaulted by another female at a residence on state Route 28 in Madison Township. A deputy dispatched to the scene spoke with all the parties involved, and it was determined that no assault actually occurred and no report was necessary. No charges were filed.

On Sept. 5 at 10:35 a.m., a citizen on Rammel Road called the sheriff’s office to report an individual trespassing on his property. Deputies arrived on scene a short time later to investigate the complaint. Roger D. McCarty of Hillsboro was arrested for breaking and entering and theft and was transported to the Highland County Justice Center.
The Highland County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call on Sept. 6 at 11:55 p.m. from a resident of Locust Road who reported hearing a loud noise outside her residence. While on the phone with the dispatcher, the caller noticed what appeared to be her neighbor’s house on fire. Sheriff’s deputies responded, and six local fire departments were toned to respond for a possible structure fire. While emergency personnel were en route, a second 911 call was received from a Brannen Road resident reporting an unknown vehicle was in front of his garage fully engulfed in flames. The first deputy on scene located a severely injured male lying next to the vehicle and dragged the victim away from the flames until Paint Creek EMS and Fire arrived to douse the fire and transport the patient to Highland District Hospital. The victim was later flown to Miami Valley Hospital. The vehicle in question appeared to have been eastbound on Brannen Road when it left the roadway and struck the original caller’s house. Further investigation of the crash is being handled by Post 14 of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
