Greenfield Lions Club provides eye screenings for local pupils

Greenfield Lions recently provided eye screenings for all kindergarten students in the Greenfield Exempted Village School district. The screening was completed on November 3 and 9 and was performed by fourth year Ohio State University optometry students under the direction of Dr. Jeff Walline.
Tests performed by the OSU students included stereo acuity, near vision acuity, cover test, distance visual acuity, retinoscopy and ophthalmoscopy. A total of 180 students were screened with 33 being referred to see an optometrist. This is a 18% referral rate. The vision problems of these students might not have been found without the detailed screening performed by the OSU students.
Fourth year OSU optometry students spend a day each week during one quarter visiting schools and screening students in the greater Columbus area. Greenfield is longest distance they travel from the Ohio State campus.
The idea of helping the Greenfield School nurse with eye screening was first suggested as a club project in the fall of 2004. The OSU students are able to give a more thorough screening than the school nurse would be able to do. The first screening was held in the spring of 2005 and except for one year, has been a yearly event since.
All costs for the screening are covered by the Greenfield Lions Club through sales of candy and brooms, the Wheels of Progress Burger Booth and Sight Seal donations. Without the public's generous support, Lions programs such as this would not be possible. The Greenfield Lions would like to thank everyone who generously donate to the Lions' work.
