Governor-elect Kasich appoints Tom Charles as Director of Public Safety, Major John Born as Superintendent of the Ohio Highway Patrol

Ohio Governor-elect John Kasich has appointed State Inspector General Tom Charles as Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety and Major John Born as Superintendent of the Ohio Highway Patrol.  

Tom Charles has a long and distinguished record in public service and law enforcement. Since 1998, he has served as Inspector General, a position he maintained under three different governors. Before his service as Inspector General, Charles served as Ohio¹s first Legislative Inspector General. Charles began his law enforcement career with the Ohio Highway Patrol, where he was an assistant superintendent with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Charles is a resident of Pickerington.

Major John Born is a 23-year veteran of the Ohio Highway Patrol, rising through the OHP ranks from his start as a Trooper in 1987 to his promotion to Major in 2005. During this time, Major Born served an array of leadership roles, including Columbus Agency Spokesman, Squad Leader in the Office of Investigative Services, Columbus Strategic Services Commander, and most recently, Field Operations Commander for the eastern half of Ohio. Major Born has received numerous awards and commendations for his service, and has been a leader in employing technology and innovation to OHP operations. He is a native of Athens and resides in Fairfield County.

Gov.-elect Kasich announced the appointments this week at a press conference in downtown Columbus.
