Former House speaker joins group lobbying for charter schools

Former Ohio House Speaker William Batchelder III, R-Medina, has joined with other former House staffers who are lobbying for the state’s largest charter school group, according to a report by Akron Beacon Journal education writer Doug Livingston.

“The online school, Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow and known as ECOT, is among the state’s lowest performing charter schools,” Livingston reports. “The for-profit companies related to ECOT are Altair Learning Management and IQ Innovations, an online education software firm. The founder, William Lager, has donated more than $1 million to prominent Ohio Republicans since 2010, among them Batchelder.”

Batchelder was the 101st speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, serving from 2011-14. He also represented the 69th District of the Ohio House of Representatives from 2007-14, and served in the House from 1969-98 previously.
