Faber issues statement on veto of Senate Bill 329

Senate President Keith Faber (R-Celina) issued the following statement Tuesday regarding the governor's veto of Senate Bill 329, a bill requiring all Ohio government agencies to undergo periodic review and renewal by the state legislature:

"I disagree with Governor Kasich, of course, but even a good governor can be wrong once in a while. My friend, the governor, is missing the fundamental point of the bill, which is to provide a thorough review of state government bureaucracy outside of the traditional budget process. The General Assembly simply lacks the time and resources to assess the effectiveness of every department in a matter of weeks, which is the timeframe we currently have to consider a budget. This bill allows for a much broader and deeper level of review that isn’t confined to the demands of a budget calendar.
“I can certainly understand how the governor would think differently, as he has hundreds of staff in these agencies working on the budget for more than a year, while the Senate typically gets about four to six weeks. That puts the executive branch and the potential for bloated bureaucracy at an advantage. Nevertheless, I have received assurances from both Speaker Rosenberger and President-Elect Obhof that this bill will get renewed consideration in the next General Assembly.”
Senator Faber represents Ohio’s 12th Senate District, which encompasses all of Allen, Champaign, Mercer, and Shelby counties as well as portions of Auglaize, Darke and Logan counties. He currently serves as President of the Ohio Senate.
