Construction underway for Lake Loramie State Park Welcome Center
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) recently celebrated the beginning of construction for the Lake Loramie State Park Welcome Center with a groundbreaking ceremony.
“Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in the legacy of Lake Loramie State Park,” ODNR Director Mary Mertz said. “This groundbreaking underscores our commitment to providing visitors with enriching experiences that celebrate the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Ohio’s state parks. The welcome center will serve as a gateway to adventure, education, and community connection, further enhancing the park’s role as a cherished destination for generations to come.”
Upon completion, the space will house the new Nature Center and Heritage Museum for Lake Loramie State Park. A historic gem, the Lake Loramie reservoir was completed in 1845 and supplied water to the Miami & Erie Canal, which was crucial for trade and transportation in the 1800s. The lake and its scenic surroundings joined the state park system in 1949 when ODNR was created.
The Welcome Center will boast a strategic location that offers panoramic views of the lake and spillway. It will also serve as the front door to the campground and a link to the day-use area. Drawing inspiration from the region’s rich canal era history, the Welcome Center’s architecture and materials will pay homage to its heritage.
Designed with future expansion in mind, additions to the center could include a camp check-in, a camp store, and a new access drive to the campgrounds. Additionally, an educational sensory garden is being discussed with the local friends of the park group.
The construction of the Lake Loramie Welcome Center marks another milestone in the ongoing commitment to environmental education and conservation in Ohio. As ODNR and the Ohio State Parks celebrate their 75th anniversary this year, that commitment continues stronger than ever.
