Chillicothe man sentenced to prison for felonious assault in Highland County
A Chillicothe man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to his role in a Highland County felonious assault case.
Darnell S. Thompson, 23, was indicted by a Highland County grand jury in October and charged with one count of complicity to aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; one count of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; felonious assault, a second-degree felony; and two gun specifications.
Thompson pleaded guilty to the felonious assault charge in March, with the remaining charges dismissed, according to court records. For that count, the indictment alleged that Thompson “did knowingly cause or attempt to cause serious physical harm” to a victim by means of a .40-caliber handgun on or about Aug. 16-17, 2023.
Thompson appeared before Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss for sentencing April 3. Thompson’s attorney, Bill Armintrout, advised that while Thompson has been awaiting sentencing, he has been “cooperative” and “has not missed a single report date to the probation office.”
Coss said he would put a note to that effect in Thompson’s file.
“The fact you showed up does have some merit for your [future] request for judicial release,” the judge said.
Coss imposed the agreed-upon sentence of three years in prison as outlined in Thompson’s plea agreement. Under the Reagan Tokes Law, the sentence could be up to four and a half years. Thompson had 58 days of jail time credit.
As previously reported, the co-defendant in this case, Cameron D. Renner, 19, also pleaded guilty to felonious assault and was sentenced Feb. 14 to four years in prison.
