Chamber of Commerce: Portman’s victory signals
voters’ support for pro-business agenda
WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s National Political Director, Bill Miller, issued the following statement Tuesday following Rob Portman’s victory in the Ohio Senate race:
“This year, the stakes and looming consequences were extremely high. The U.S. Chamber resolved to fight for pro-business candidates like Rob Portman in an unprecedented fashion and followed through by launching the most aggressive voter education and issue advocacy effort in our nearly 100-year history.
“With Rob Portman’s victory, the voters in Ohio sent a clear and resounding message, calling for a robust defense of the American free enterprise system.
“As our free enterprise system has been under siege from an emboldened, intrusive, and extraordinary expansion of government, Rob Portman stepped in and campaigned with a plan to create jobs in Ohio. He understood that this election was about Washington renewing its focus on economic growth.
“By electing so many pro-business candidates, voters called to end the trend toward more government spending, higher taxes, and more regulations. Now, it’s time for these leaders to fight for the commonsense economic policies America needs to get our economy back on track.”
The U.S. Chamber played a major role nationwide in the 2010 elections, endorsing candidates who demonstrated consistent support for America’s job creators and will work to advance a pro-growth agenda in Congress. In 2008, 213 of the 265 Chamber-endorsed candidates (81%) were elected.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
