Center for Responsive Politics report shows wealthiest members of Congress

Representative Darrell Issa, R-Calif., is again the wealthiest member of Congress, according to a report this month by Will Tucker for the Center for Responsive Politics.

In a report on "wealth inequality," Tucker reports "The House and Senate have their own form of inequality. Of the 534 current members, the 53 richest owned nearly 80 percent of the estimated wealth held by all federal lawmakers in 2014. That concentration resembles the inequality that exists in the U.S. more broadly, where 76 percent of the country’s wealth is held by the top 10 percent of households."

Tucker notes that the average wealth for a member of Congress is approximately $1.1 million (2014), while the typical American family's average worth is approximately about $56,355 (2013).

He is followed by Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) at approximately $388 million, and Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) at approximately $243 million.

Members of Congress receive an annual salary of $174,000.
