Capital projects continue to improve state parks for visitors

Sailing enthusiasts, campers and other park guests recently gathered for the Ohio Department of Natural Resource (ODNR) official ribbon-cutting for the four renovated cabins, new campground electric service line and playground at Cowan Lake State Park. The event also celebrated the completion of three newly renovated cabins at Pike Lake State Park.
The updates to Cowan Lake State Park and Pike Lake State Park are a part of the ongoing efforts to renovate the Ohio State Park infrastructure. In 2014, Governor Kasich and the Ohio General Assembly provided $88.5 million towards improving Ohio’s state parks. Nearly $38 million was just approved in the 2016 capital budget for additional and ongoing improvement projects at Ohio State Parks.
“This is a beautiful park that we know families enjoy,” ODNR Director Jim Zehringer said. “By investing in these state parks, we are investing in the local communities around them. These cabins were made by Ohio contractors and workers.”

The total cost of the projects at both Cowan Lake State Park and Pike Lake State Park was roughly $1.3 million.
During the event, Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger announced that Cowan Lake State Park would take part in an exciting sister park program with a park in the Hubei Province of China. It is the first agreement of its kind in Ohio.
Many park guests were excited about the new improvements.
“This is not the cabin I grew up with,” Clinton County Commissioner Kerry Steed said. “To have the wooden floors, tiling and indoor plumbing, it’s amazing.”
The renovated cabins include updated restrooms, kitchens and living spaces, along with rustic wooden Adirondack chairs handcrafted by the ODNR Forestry Department using Ohio trees. More capital projects are scheduled or nearing completion across the state of Ohio.
