Britton wins Republican primary race for Highland County Commissioner
Terry Britton has unofficially defeated Barb Cole in the Republican primary race for Highland County Commissioner.
Unofficial results from the Highland County Board of Elections show a total of 4,150 votes for Britton and 2,761 votes for Cole.
Britton will face Democratic candidate Tara Campbell and Independent candidate Alex Butler in the Nov. 8 election for the seat currently occupied by Republican Tom Horst.
Britton told The Highland County Press that he was pleased with how the “first step” in his campaign went.
“I thought the campaign went pretty well,” Britton said. “I had a lot of help from my family, and there were a lot of people on the team that helped me throughout the county. I felt pretty good about the way things were coming through in the last couple months. The results tonight proved that the hard work paid off.
“I just want to thank all the people that’s helped me through this step. This is the first step, but we’ve got another big step in November. I feel like we’re ready for that challenge, and we’ll see how things go. It’s a great win tonight.”

A lifelong Highland County resident, Britton retired from the Hobart Corporation in Hillsboro after over 42 years of work, including management for 35 of the 42 years. He currently serves as a member of the Hillsboro City Schools Board of Education and was recently sworn in for his second four-year term after being reelected last November. He currently serves as board president.
Britton thanked the voters of Highland County for their support in the primary election.
“I’d just like to say thank you for supporting me, as I think I got approximately 60 percent of the vote,” Britton said. “If elected, I’m going to work very hard for the community to try to make this place a very, very good place to live. It’s already a very good place to live, but we can make it better, and I want to give back to the community. We have a vested interest in this community.
“Thank you to everybody that’s supported me and helped me through this process.”
