Barrera sworn in as provisional HPD officer

Highland County Sheriff-elect Donnie Barrera was sworn in as a provisional officer with the Hillsboro Police Department, Tuesday afternoon at the Hillsboro City Building in a ceremony performed by Hillsboro Mayor Drew Hastings.
Barrera was hired to fill a void left by officers who are currently on leave for injuries and other issues, according to Hillsboro Police Chief Todd Whited.
"I really appreciate you doing this," Hastings told Barrera.

Barrera will work with the police department for approximately four to six months, according to Whited, while the department waits for officers to return or to find additional help.
"We have three officers out right now," Whited told The Highland County Press. "We're down from 12 to nine. Until we can get somebody healthy, he will be helping us out to keep our manpower up."
Whited said that Barrera's law enforcement background meant that he could be hired quickly to fill in for the officers on leave, and the department would save time on training.
