Area woman killed on Walnut Street

An East Danville Road woman was killed Monday morning after she was struck by a vehicle outside of Paint Valley Supply, located at 123 W. Walnut Street in Hillsboro.

According to Highland County Coroner Dr. Paul Terrell, the 20-year-old woman died at the scene.

Hillsboro Fire and Rescue and the Hillsboro Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 9:35 a.m.

Officer Jon Salyer of the HPD said preliminary reports show that Heather Berry was behind Paint Valley Supply near a loading dock, talking on her cell phone.

The driver of a 1980 Chevrolet 60 Series grain truck "was backing up and had seen her in the rearview mirror," Salyer said. "As he was backing he was looking from mirror to mirror and she didn't realize he was backing and walked into the path of the vehicle.

"It appears to have been an accident," Salyer said. "We're still in the initial investigation and it will be days, if not weeks, before there is a determination if there is any kind of fault, but I just don't think so."

Salyer said that toxicology reports are being compiled on both the driver and the Berry, "but that is standard procedure, and we will go from there."

The driver was not taken into custody and no charges have been filed.

Paint Valley Supply temporarily closed, Salyer said, while the incident was under investigation.
