Several local farms were highlighted in a winter newsletter published by the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
The following excerpts were taken from the newsletter.
More than 150 people attended the third annual Highland County Farm Tour, sponsored by the Highland County Farm Bureau and Highland Soil and Water Conservation District, on Sept. 17. John Levo provided Historic Family Farms information at the Carr Century Farm stop. Thank you to Jim Carr and family for opening their farm as part of the tour and to Levo for encouraging local families to register their farms.

The annual John R. Simon's Sorghum Festival was held this fall on his fifth-generation farm in the Portsmouth area. Simon has hosted the event for more than 30 years, a local tradition which features the making of sorghum syrup along with local arts, music and crafts.
In 2016, the following area families registered their century, sesquicentennial or bicentennial farms:
• Adams County: Gustin, 1882.
• Brown County: Meranda, 1909.
• Fayette County: Ging, 1900; Haymaker, 1902; Waddle, 1889.
• Highland County: Dickey, 1906; Fairley, 1887; Kelley, 1900; Malott, 1889; Teeters, 1902.
