Press Release-
Adena Health System’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program has been approved for a five-year accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Each of Adena’s four GME program areas (Internal Medicine; Family Medicine; Emergency Medicine; and Traditional Internship), as well as the institution, have received the lengthy endorsement.

“This accreditation validates that Adena is meeting the highest AOA standards in terms of our facilities, teaching, and the overall education of our physician residents,” said Adena’s Senior Medical Advisor Dr. John Fortney. “With our program now fully-certified over the next five years, we can continue to work on transitioning to the new Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education structure.”

The accreditation process is highly-detailed, requiring multiple interviews, a lot of supportive documentation, and visits by the AOA to make the final determination. A five-year accreditation is the longest possible, and will carry Adena’s GME program through 2020, when the nation’s medical education programs for MD and DO training merge to a single-accreditation body, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Nearly one year ago, the AOA, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and ACGME began the transition to a single accreditation system for graduate medical education in the U.S. The transition is expected to be fully implemented in July 2020. A single accreditation system will give graduates of Osteopathic and Allopathic (MD) medical schools the opportunity to complete their residency and/or fellowship with any ACGME-accredited program.

Since it began in 2012, Adena’s Residency Program has grown from just six Traditional Program residents, to a highly-competitive program, which this year will include nearly 50 residents participating in four specialty programs. This year, more than 600 newly-graduated physicians applied to participate in Adena’s Residency Program.
