Reportedly, a family member present was attempting to turn off the Ranger utility ATV, while at the same time, the child was attempting to exit the ATV, accidentally stepping on the gas pedal, which caused the ATV to accelerate. The Ranger utility ATV then traveled out of a barn, where it struck a tree, pinning the child between the seat and the dashboard of the ATV.

Sheriff Barrera advises that the child was driven by ambulance to Cincinnati Children's Hospital with severe head trauma, where the child later died from injuries sustained.

The Highland County Sheriff's Office has ruled this incident to be an accident.
