Wilson hits grand slam as Lions defuse Rockets

Saturday was a grand day for the Fairfield Lions. Though the game was scoreless through two innings, big hits and many runs followed, as the Lions defeated Southern Hills Athletic Conference rival Fayetteville, 10-4.

The Lions broke a scoreless tie in the third with two runs, followed by five runs in the fourth. One run was scored in the fifth by the visiting Lion club, and they finished their scoring in the sixth with two more runs on the scoreboard.

The hit of the game was a grand slam by Joey Wilson in the fourth.

[[In-content Ad]]Wilson was also the winning pitcher, allowing four runs (none earned) on five hits and zero walks. Wilson, a junior, struck out 10 batters as he faced 29. Wilson held Fayetteville to a batting average of .172.

Fayetteville scored three runs in the fifth and one more in the seventh.

The Lions totaled 10 hits, with Cody Bennett, Dylan Rohde (who also had an RBI) and Blake Hildebrant each gaining two hits. One of Hildebrant's hits was a double.

Gaining one hit each were Wyatt Crothers, Isaiah Liggins, Quintin Schaffer and Wilson's four-RBI home run. Crothers, Liggins and Zach Cox each had one RBI.

The Lions were also patient at the plate, having a "good eye" by drawing eight walks. Crothers and Cox each had two walks, while Gage Montgomery, Liggins, Schaffer and Wilson each had one base on balls. Bennett and Crothers each had a steal.
