Tigers top Lions in county matchup

Consistent scoring for the McClain Tigers, along with the defense the program is known for, put the Tigers ahead in the scoring column for the second time this season once the final buzzer sounded.

The Tigers (2-4), led by the 15-point effort from Randal Mischal, defeated their Highland County counterpart Fairfield, 60-48 Saturday night at McClain High School.

With the two schools being under 15 miles apart from each other, this Highland County matchup saw both teams battle closely in the scoring column in the first half, with the Tigers trailing the visiting Lions, 18-13.


[[In-content Ad]]From there, though, MHS led all quarter scoring, starting with a 15-11 second frame, but still saw them trailing 29-28 at halftime.

The third quarter was a big difference for both squads, as the Tigers showed their consistency in the scoring column with 14 points in the third, while their defense held the Lions (1-6) in check at six points, overtaking the game lead at 42-35.

McClain charged ahead in the fourth with their best scoring quarter of the game, outscoring the Lions, 18-13.

Breaking down Mischal's 15 points, he made five two-point baskets, followed by one 3-pointer, and he was 2-of-2 from the free-throw line in the win.

Bryce Duff and Wyatt Jones each scored nine points for MHS, with Duff going 6-of-9 from the free-throw line and both players making one 3-pointer.

For the Lions, they were led in scoring by Matthew Leach with 13 points, including three 3-pointers and two two-point buckets. Ethan Putnam, followed with 12 points, making two 3-pointers, two field goals and he was also 2-of-2 from the free-throw line.

In all, both teams combined for 13 3-pointers. At the free-throw line, MHS was 11-of-19 (58 percent), and the Lions went 4-of-5.

The Tigers out-rebounded FHS, 39-24, and each team made 15 turnovers.
