State Track Preview: Event Times, Schedule and State Qualifiers
With one weekend in the 2016-17 high school sports season left on the schedule, there are 15 athletes from Highland County still remaining in the track and field season, with them competing in the 2017 Division II and III OHSAA State Track and Field Championships in Columbus at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The two-day event on the campus of The Ohio State University will showcase the best of the best from Highland County in various track and field events, even with the chance for multiple state championships to be won.
For McClain, they have six student-athletes competing at state this year, the most from Highland County. They include seated racer senior Kaylee Hurley, who is a three-time state champion, and senior Tristan Pitzer, who will be racing in the boys 200-meter dash. There is also the MHS girls 4x200m relay team of juniors Hunter Scott and Chayden Pitzer, sophomore Maddy Stegbauer and freshman Ashley Hardesty.
Chayden Pitzer will also be competing in two individual events, those being the Division II girls 100m hurdles and the 200m dash. Speaking of the 200m dash races, how cool is it for the Pitzer siblings to both not just qualify to race at state, but to also each qualify for the 200m dash?

In the seated races, McClain senior Kaylee Hurley will race in the 100m, 400m and 800m events and throw in the shot put. She won three state championships last year in the 400, 800 and shot put events and was state runner-up in the 100.
The Fairfield Lions have five track and field athletes ready to compete at state this year with the 4x800m relay team of senior Trent Swisher, juniors Matthew Mangus and Noah Richmond, and sophomore Brandtson Duffie returning back to state after also qualifying for the race one year ago. Three of those athletes also qualified for three different Division III individual events with Mangus in the 3200m, Richmond in the 1600m and Duffie running in the 800m race.
On the girls side for the Lions, junior Blake Adams will compete in the shot put event in Division III. She is a three-time SHAC champion and was third at regionals last weekend.
Hillsboro is sending four athletes to the state championships for Division II with seniors Jeremy Hayton and Luke Gallimore and juniors Austin Goolsby and Austin Kimball running in the 4x100m relay. This will be the second visit to state for Gallimore, as he raced in the 4x200m race a year ago.
Goolsby will also be taking part in a second event, the Division II pole vault where he not only enters as the defending state runner-up, but he had the top height going into the event with an excellent chance to return to Highland County with a state championship, as he stated earlier in the week that is the goal.
Hayton will also be making his state debut in the high jump, where he is also a favorite to take home the top spot. During the indoor track season, Hayton jumped 6-09.00 to win the indoor state championship, and this spring he’s jumped a season-best 6-06 at the start of the season. He enters state with a very respectable 6-04 height.
