State-ranked LC continues undefeated season; shutout Lady Lions

A five-goal first half, with one goal added in the final 40 minutes, was more than enough for the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs to stay undefeated in the 2013 regular season, defeating the Fairfield Lady Lions, 6-0 Monday.
This was a non-conference match for the two schools, as they already played their Southern Hills Athletic Conference match earlier in the season. For LC on Monday, they had two players in freshman Hannah Binkley and junior Sydney Cromer each score two goals for the team lead.
The LC girls are ranked sixth in the state in Division III this week and on Friday finished undefeated in conference for their third straight conference title.
"The girls are playing extremely good soccer," LC coach Dennis West said. "They've maintained a high level of play throughout the season, and they really complement each other."
Binkley was first to add a goal with 37:45 left in the first half as she netted the first goal with an assist from junior Morgan Fittro.
From there, the match continued to be all Lady Mustangs on their home field with Cromer scoring her first goal of the match, unassisted, with 33:08 on the first half clock. Binkley followed with her second goal at 13:26 with the assist from junior Sam Whitenack.
The lead went to 4-0 with Cromer's second goal at the 8:58 mark, and the fifth goal of the match came from junior Shelby Stewart as there was just 1:57 left in the opening half. Stewart's goal was assisted by freshman Rebecca Stewart.

The final goal of the match came in the second half as sophomore Madison Wills scored her first goal of the season, unassisted, with 16:52 left on the clock.
LC keepers, sophomore Bailey Leininger and freshman Sabrina Duncan, totaled three saves in the match, combined.
For the Lady Lions, keeper Lizzie Jones totaled 22 saves as the Lady Mustangs outshot the visitors, 33-6. Jones totaled 13 saves in the first half.
"The girls are coming around," FHS coach Sam Spargur said. "Lizzie did well with the 20-plus saves."
LC was voted a No. 1 overall seed in the SE District for their play this season.
"I'm happy with the ranking the girls received," West said. "They were rewarded for how well they played this season with the ranking."
The LC girls will be back in action on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. when they host Eastern Brown on Senior Night.
