Sports Today: 4 out of 5 Highland County girls basketball teams on the schedule for Tuesday

Following two wins by Highland County girls basketball teams on Monday to start the week, the schedule continues with four teams from the county in Fairfield, Lynchburg-Clay, McClain and Whiteoak all in action Tuesday.
Of those four teams, two will be making their season debuts (Lynchburg-Clay and McClain), while Fairfield will be looking for their second consecutive win in as many days.
Looking back at Monday night, congratulations are in order for Fairfield senior Grace Shope for becoming the all-time leading scorer in Fairfield Lady Lions girls basketball history. She needed one point entering the game to achieve the feat, and she finished with 16 points in the season opener.

In fact, three Fairfield Lady Lions had double-digit scoring, as junior Brianna Barnes totaled 15 points and senior Blake Adams scored 15 points, plus added 11 rebounds for a double-double. Click here to read the game article.
Also congratulations to the Hillsboro Lady Indians for winning their season opener as well on Monday night, defeating the Fayetteville Lady Rockets, 58-50. HHS was led by three players with nine points each in Natalie Sullivan, Lana Grover and Riley Moberly.

Girls Basketball
- McClain vs. Unioto
The McClain Lady Tigers open the season with a new look after seeing over half of their starting lineup from last season graduate. This will be a good first test for the Lady Tigers, but they get to open their season at home. Focus is on the defense of McClain this season, especially in the early stages. MHS head coach Jarrod Haines spoke about the defense of MHS during a preseason interview:
“Overall, team defense is a focus of ours. We have allowed too many easy baskets in the past, and we just need to be a little tougher on the defensive end. Hopefully that will lead into our offense. We are kind of balanced, quick, athletic and have played good defense at times.”

- Lynchburg-Clay at Miami Trace
Both teams made lengthy postseason tournament runs last season, with Miami Trace reaching the Division II State Semifinals and the Lynchburg-Clay Lady Mustangs playing in the Division III Regional Finals.
The issue ahead in this game is LC graduated most of their starting lineup from last season, and the Lady Panthers still have a good number of players on the roster from that team entering this season.
The player to watch for LC is Peyton Scott, as the junior returns as the leading scorer for LC last season. LC also has to play this game on the road, so it will not be an easy task for them opening their 2017-18 season.
During the preseason, LC head coach Whitney Lewis said this of her team:
“We are looking for everyone to contribute this year,” Lewis said. “We have two seniors — Abby Blankenship and Emily Pinkerton — that I feel have a lot they can give this team in experience and leadership. We have several other returning players in our junior and sophomore class that contributed to a successful season last year. They are eager to do the same this year.”

- Fairfield vs. Southeastern
This game features two 1,000-plus point scorers in Shope from Fairfield and Ella Skeens of Southeastern, who has committed to play women’s basketball at Dayton next season. Last season, Skeens averaged 22.2 points per game and 7.6 rebounds per game.
This will be a competitive game for both teams, and for Fairfield, there won’t be many tougher tests than Tuesday’s game against SEHS all season. Last year, SEHS finished 23-2 overall and was undefeated in the Scioto Valley Conference.
- Whiteoak at Paint Valley
This will be the second game of the season for the Lady Wildcats of Whiteoak as they will be looking for their first win of the year. They lost to East Clinton in their season opener at WHS on Saturday. This is the season opener for Paint Valley. Paint Valley went 11-13 last season.
