Post 129 drops season opener to Chillicothe Post 62

The Hillsboro American Legion Post 129 baseball team opened their season on Wednesday, falling on the road by a 6-4 score to host Chillicothe Post 62 at Ross County Park.

Hillsboro scored all four of their runs in the top of the fourth inning where Jonah Humphries, Andrew Dingey, Matthew Mitchell and Grant Crum all scored runs for the Post 129 club.

Humphries reached the bases with a one-out single and took second base on a wild pitch, then followed that by reaching third on another wild pitch. Dingey forced a walk to reach first base, then stole second.

Mitchell took first on a fielder’s choice as Humphries scored a run. Mitchell then went to second on a fielder’s choice and to third on a wild pitch, which eventually allowed Dingey to score a run. Next was Crum, who drew a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. Both Crum and Mitchell crossed home plate to give Hillsboro four runs in the inning. Also in the fourth, Justin Scott forced a walk, as did Mason Stanley.

For Post 62, they led the game early with a four-run second inning, followed by two runs in the bottom of the fourth, breaking a 4-4 tie to gain the win.

The loss on the mound went to Gavin Taulbee, who threw 47 pitches in relief. Taulbee pitched 3.2 innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on three hits and no walks, while finishing with two strikeouts in facing 16 batters.

Austin Brown was the starting pitcher for the Post 129 team, also throwing 47 pitches in his no-decision. In 1.1 innings, Brown allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks as he faced 10 batters. Billy Depugh pitched one inning of relief for Hillsboro, allowing no runs or hits as he faced three batters.

Offensively, the Post 129 team finished with three hits off the bats of Kelton Anderson, Humphries and Dingey. Stanley, Dingey, Zach Mitchell and Scott all forced walks.

Next for Post 129 baseball is a home doubleheader on Thursday, May 31 vs. Chillicothe Post 757 at Richard Shaffer Park, starting at 5 p.m.
