Overtime win propels Fairfield to district finals

The Fairfield Lady Lions not only avenged a regular-season loss on Wednesday night, but their overtime win over the Rock Hill Redwomen in the Division III SE District Semifinals continued the tournament road for the Fairfield squad.

The Lady Lions won against Rock Hill, 43-37 in overtime at Jackson High School against Rock Hill, and the win moves them to a meeting with Southern Hills Athletic Conference rival, the North Adams Lady Green Devils on Saturday, Feb. 25 at noon in a game to be played at the Waverly Downtown Gym. 

On Wednesday in the district semifinal victory, Fairfield led 14-5 at the end of the opening eight-minute first quarter with Faith Donley sinking a 3-pointers and two-point basket for five points, Kassi Miller making a 3-pointer, Hailey Tolle scoring five points with a two-point field goal and a 3-of-3 performance from the free-throw line, plus Hannah Hamilton making a free throw. 

Fairfield was held to seven points in the second quarter, while Rock Hill totaled 13 points in the same frame for a 21-18 Lady Lion lead at halftime. Fairfield’s seven-point quarter saw Jobey Hattan and Miller each sink a 3-pointer, while Tolle made one free throw. 

The leading scorer this season for Fairfield is Peyton Magee, and she was held scoreless by the Rock Hill defense in the first half. That wasn’t the case in the third quarter as Magee scored all eight points by Fairfield in the third frame with two 3-pointers and a two-point basket. Rock Hill also had eight points in the third, leaving the Lady Lions ahead by three points at 29-26 after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Rock Hill forced overtime with a nine-point frame, while Fairfield scored six points in the quarter with Magee scoring three points, Donley with two points and Tolle with one point. 

Fairfield sealed the district semifinal win in OT with eight points, while Rock Hill scored two points. For the Lady Lions in the overtime continuation of the game, Magee totaled seven points with a two-point basket and five free throws made on five attempts. Hattan made one free throw in OT to complete the scoring. 

As a team, the Lady Lions totaled five two-point baskets, six 3-pointers, and they were 15-of-24 from the free-throw line. Rock Hill went 9-of-11 from the free-throw line, while adding eight two-point baskets and four 3-pointers. 

Fairfield was led by Magee with 18 points (all in the second half) as she made three two-point baskets, two 3-pointers, and she was 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. 

Also for FHS, Donley and Tolle each scored seven points, Miller finished with six points, Hattan had four points and Hamilton scored one point. 

Haley Matthews led Rock Hill with 13 points.

The most recent loss for Fairfield (19-5) came against Rock Hill in a regular-season game Jan. 21. The Lady Lions have won their last eight games.

In their SHAC games earlier this season, North Adams (24-0) defeated Fairfield by scores of 51-37 (Nov. 21) and 54-32 (Jan. 12).
